About Black & Tan Construction
Black & Tan Construction provides residential excavation and sitework for custom homes, second residences, and estate properties throughout the Okemo Valley and surrounding towns. We are intentionally small and selective, allowing each project to receive close attention, clear communication, and a measured, deliberate approach from start to finish.
Ben Waters
Black & Tan Construction is owned and operated by Ben Waters. Based in Weathersfield, Vermont, Ben has worked in excavation full time since 2004 and founded Black & Tan Construction in 2011.
Ben approaches sitework with a strong emphasis on planning, sound judgment, and follow-through. He works closely with homeowners, builders, and architects to align sitework with a shared vision, focusing on details that support both the construction process and the long-term performance of the site.
His work reflects a steady, thoughtful approach shaped by experience in complex terrain and a commitment to consistency and care on every project.

Our Work Process
Our work is guided by perspective, thoughtfulness, balance, calmness, and consideration—for both the property and the people involved. These values shape how we communicate, make decisions, and respond to changing site conditions. The result is a steady, respectful process and work that supports reliable schedules and long-term site performance.

Site Visit & Planning
Every project begins with a thorough site visit and an in-depth conversation to review your goals, priorities, and timing requirements. We take the time to understand the property, discuss potential challenges, and ensure that our approach aligns with your expectations. We collaborate with designers, landscape architects, and other building trades to bring the customer's vision for their property to life.

Project Cost Assessment
Black & Tan Construction provides transparent construction estimates based on planning documents and stated goals. Taking the time to thoroughly discuss the client's goals for their property reduces the number of unknowns when estimating an earthwork project. Excavation inherently involves navigating unknowns; understanding the client's vision shouldn't be one of them!
Communication & Coordination
Throughout the project, we maintain open and ongoing communication, proactively addressing unforeseen needs, coordinating with other trades, and helping keep the schedule on track. As work progresses, we also discuss finishing touches, landscape prep, and other aspects that will impact the long-term performance and appearance of your property.

Execution & Follow-up
We focus on accurate layout, consistent grades, proper drainage, and clean transitions throughout each phase of excavation. Attention to detail at this stage helps ensure downstream trades can work efficiently, reduces rework, and results in sites that perform reliably in all of Vermont’s weather conditions. Even after the project is complete, we keep lines of communication open to support future work or questions.

Our Commitment to Exceptional Sitework
We are committed to exceptional sitework rooted in careful planning, sound judgment, and respect for the land. Our goal is work that performs reliably, supports the broader project, and stands up over time.
